NEWS - NHS hospitals asked to generate own power amid blackouts fears

Four hospitals already signed up to deal under which they reduce demand from National Grid by using diesel generators

NHS hospitals are being asked to cut their power demand from the National Grid as part of a government attempt to stave off power blackouts, which the energy watchdog Ofgem warns could arrive as early as 2015.

According to one energy company, four hospitals have already signed up to a deal under which they will reduce demand at peak times by using diesel-fired generators.

KiWi Power, which is a commercial partner of National Grid, says it has started to approach every NHS trust in the country about undertaking similar plans after winning a government contract to encourage power saving.

"We are paying large consumers to reduce their energy consumption. This includes hotel chains, water utilities and NHS hospitals, which can save between £100,000 and £200,000 every year by implementing our demand reduction scheme," said Ziko Abram, KiWi Power's founder and director.

Ofgem warned this week that the UK's buffer of spare electricity would fall from 4% of national supplies to 2% by 2015 and radical measures were needed to increase capacity while cutting demand.

The National Grid, which runs the power wires and gas pipelines, said it would be making payments to encourage energy companies to keep more power stations on standby while paying big businesses to shut off electricity between 4pm and 8pm.

Abram said medical centres were well placed to make savings because they had standby generators available to keep operating theatres and other vital facilities working.

However, the government has failed to convince homeowners that they should adopt energy efficiency measures. Ministers admitted this week that only four households had taken up the Green Deal to make households more energy efficient, although many more had signed on.

Ed Davey, the energy and climate change secretary, has admitted that "without timely action, there would be risks to security of supply". But his department believes the Ofgem calculations slightly overstate the dangers of power shortages.

Davey this week outlined measures including a £10bn guarantee to underwrite new nuclear plants, tax incentives for shale drilling and more long-term help for those building windfarms aimed at strengthening the UK's energy security.

But the shadow energy secretary, Caroline Flint, accused the government on Friday of taking too long to respond to the impending energy shortfall.

"We have known for some time that Britain faces a capacity crunch in the middle of this decade, but the fact the government has taken so long to introduce its energy market reform proposals has hardly helped," she said. "Three years after the government drew up their plans, the energy bill still has not finished going through parliament and lots of important details are unknown. Ministers must clear up this uncertainty as soon as possible so businesses have the confidence to invest in vital new energy infrastructure."

Meanwhile, a second small power company, First Utility, said this week's measures would raise domestic prices and decried the lack of action to shake up the wholesale gas market. "Although improving energy efficiency and providing more generation capacity is important, another option that we would like to see considered is a reform of the way that energy is traded in the wholesale market to lessen the impact on consumers," said Darren Braham, chief financial officer and founder of First Utility.

"Our own analysis shows that the lack of competition in the wholesale energy market, due to the opaque way in which the big six [companies] trade, adds £50 to domestic dual-fuel bills each year - a cost to the country of more than £1.3bn per year. With so little energy for sale on the forward wholesale market, smaller suppliers are penalised, adding to our costs and preventing us from offering even lower prices to consumers."

PSYCHOLOGY - Breaking habits before they start

Our daily routines can become so ingrained that we perform them automatically, such as taking the same route to work every day. Some behaviors, such as smoking or biting your fingernails, become so habitual that we can't stop even if we want to.

Although breaking habits can be hard, MIT neuroscientists have now shown that they can prevent them from taking root in the first place, in rats learning to run a maze to earn a reward. The researchers first demonstrated that activity in two distinct brain regions is necessary in order for habits to crystallize. Then, they were able to block habits from forming by interfering with activity in one of the brain regions - the infralimbic (IL) cortex, which is located in the prefrontal cortex.

The MIT researchers, led by Institute Professor Ann Graybiel, used a technique called optogenetics to block activity in the IL cortex. This allowed them to control cells of the IL cortex using light. When the cells were turned off during every maze training run, the rats still learned to run the maze correctly, but when the reward was made to taste bad, they stopped, showing that a habit had not formed. If it had, they would keep going back by habit.

"It's usually so difficult to break a habit," Graybiel says. "It's also difficult to have a habit not form when you get a reward for what you're doing. But with this manipulation, it's absolutely easy. You just turn the light on, and bingo."

Graybiel, a member of MIT's McGovern Institute for Brain Research, is the senior author of a paper describing the findings in the June 27 issue of the journal Neuron. Kyle Smith, a former MIT postdoc who is now an assistant professor at Dartmouth College, is the paper's lead author.

Patterns of habitual behavior

Previous studies of how habits are formed and controlled have implicated the IL cortex as well as the striatum, a part of the brain related to addiction and repetitive behavioral problems, as well as normal functions such as decision-making, planning and response to reward. It is believed that the motor patterns needed to execute a habitual behavior are stored in the striatum and its circuits.

Recent studies from Graybiel's lab have shown that disrupting activity in the IL cortex can block the expression of habits that have already been learned and stored in the striatum. Last year, Smith and Graybiel found that the IL cortex appears to decide which of two previously learned habits will be expressed.

"We have evidence that these two areas are important for habits, but they're not connected at all, and no one has much of an idea of what the cells are doing as a habit is formed, as the habit is lost, and as a new habit takes over," Smith says.

To investigate that, Smith recorded activity in cells of the IL cortex as rats learned to run a maze. He found activity patterns very similar to those that appear in the striatum during habit formation. Several years ago, Graybiel found that a distinctive "task-bracketing" pattern develops when habits are formed. This means that the cells are very active when the animal begins its run through the maze, are quiet during the run, and then fire up again when the task is finished.

This kind of pattern "chunks" habits into a large unit that the brain can simply turn on when the habitual behavior is triggered, without having to think about each individual action that goes into the habitual behavior.

The researchers found that this pattern took longer to appear in the IL cortex than in the striatum, and it was also less permanent. Unlike the pattern in the striatum, which remains stored even when a habit is broken, the IL cortex pattern appears and disappears as habits are formed and broken. This was the clue that the IL cortex, not the striatum, was tracking the development of the habit.

Multiple layers of control

The researchers' ability to optogenetically block the formation of new habits suggests that the IL cortex not only exerts real-time control over habits and compulsions, but is also needed for habits to form in the first place.

"The previous idea was that the habits were stored in the sensorimotor system and this cortical area was just selecting the habit to be expressed. Now we think it's a more fundamental contribution to habits, that the IL cortex is more actively making this happen," Smith says.

This arrangement offers multiple layers of control over habitual behavior, which could be advantageous in reining in automatic behavior, Graybiel says. It is also possible that the IL cortex is contributing specific pieces of the habitual behavior, in addition to exerting control over whether it occurs, according to the researchers. They are now trying to determine whether the IL cortex and the striatum are communicating with and influencing each other, or simply acting in parallel.

"A role for the IL cortex in the regulation of habit is not a new idea, but the details of the interaction between it and the striatum that emerge from this analysis are novel and interesting," says Christopher Pittenger, an assistant professor of psychiatry and psychology at Yale University School of Medicine, who was not part of the research team. "Thinking in the long term, it raises the question of whether targeted manipulations of the IL cortex might be useful for the breaking habits - and exciting possibility with potential clinical ramifications."

The study suggests a new way to look for abnormal activity that might cause disorders of repetitive behavior, Smith says. Now that the researchers have identified the neural signature of a normal habit, they can look for signs of habitual behavior that is learned too quickly or becomes too rigid. Finding such a signature could allow scientists to develop new ways to treat disorders of repetitive behavior by using deep brain stimulation, which uses electronic impulses delivered by a pacemaker to suppress abnormal brain activity.

The research was funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Office of Naval Research, the Stanley H. and Sheila G. Sydney Fund and funding from R. Pourian and Julia Madadi.

EARS - NOISE -TINNITUS

sound heard in one or both ears - there is Objective tinnitus where the tinnitus sound can be heard from the outside due to ear muscles spasms or like a pulse and it is called pulsatile tinnitus; Subjective tinnitus is when hearing sounds when no external sound exist, and it's rather a symptom of an underlying disease
the brain areas responsible for interpreting sound and producing fearful emotions are exceptionally active in people who complain of tinnitus.
Researchers at the University at Buffalo have discovered tinnitus -- phantom auditory sensations -- originate somewhere in brain, not in the ear.  the brain's auditory cortex begins receiving diminished neural signals from the cochlea in the ear, due to injury or age, the auditory cortex "turns up the volume," increasing weak neural signals from the cochlea. This increased volume of these weak signals may be the buzzing, ringing, or hissing characteristic of tinnitus, the researchers say.

TCM
in TCM it is called "phantom noise"
Kidney yin Deficiency, Liver yin Deficiency, Liver Fire, Liver Blood Deficiency,Lung Qi Deficiency, Phlegm Stagnation, Spleen Qi Deficiency, Spleen Qi Sinking, Qi Flow is affected,
Imbalance between yin and YANG where Qi is Rising and Rebellious
is it Ben? Biao?
1.Is that Noise REAL?
The louder and the longer the sound, the lower the Kidney energy isWhen the Kidney Qi goes bellow a certain level, the body sends a signal like an alarm - the ringing in the ears
Diagnosis is made through the analysis of : hair, skin, eyes, tongue, noises, nails, urinalysis, palms
TCM theory:
"When the yin fails to contain the YANG, the flow in the channels will become rapid, causing the yang qi to become excessive and reckless. If the YANG qi is deficient and unable to counterbalance the yin, communication between the internal organs will be disrupted, and the nine orifices will cease to function....When yin and YANG are balanced, the five visceral organs function appropriately together....vision is clear and hearing is acute." According to this concept, both yang agitation (from yin deficiency) and YANG deficiency can lead to disorders in hearing (the ears being two of the nine orifices; the eyes also being two of the orifices). In cases of YANG deficiency, the body is overwhelmed by yin (substance) and the communication becomes blocked; organs don't interact properly with each other or with their external manifestations, such as eyes and ears."Headaches, ringing in the ears, and obstruction of the nine orifices are usually caused by imbalances in the stomach and intestines." TCM - organ is related to an orifice eg: Kidneys open in the ears, kidney Qi communicates with the ears, and manifest in the Hair
Kidneys (and their meridians) store Vital Essence, manufacture marrow, dominate bones, regulate the source of yin and YANG ,growth, development, governs metabolism, are related to the endocrine system, reception of Qi reproductive, regeneration, regulation of body fluids, joints (hips, knees),hair growth, ears functions, brain-nervous system, starting point of life force (urinating is first sign of life)
when the kidneys are functioning well, the five types of sound can be heard. The louder and the longer the sound, the lower the Kidney energy is. When the Kidney Qi goes bellow a certain level, the body sends a signal like an alarm - the ringing in the ears - need for a refill - the tank is empty - Kidney energy is like money - difficult to save and very easy to spend
http://askdrlu.com/2011/01/12/ringing-in-the-ears/  ]
Kidneys - lack of warmth =lack of YANG energy (lumbago,cold,painful knees,dizziness, hypothyroid,tinnitus)
 - tinnitus is not an auditory but related to channels and internal organs a Kidney disorder (kidney yin weakness)  “the Kidneys open up to the ears”-kidneys promote Qi and Blood to the ears, and Liver
Kidney Deficiency (usually Gradual Onset)
Kidneys YANG Deficiency, Kidney Yin Deficiency, Kidney Failing to receive Qi, and Kidney Essence Deficiency may all lead to tinnitus. In this case the ringing will generally be of a lower pitch.-Kidney yin Deficiency (excess YANG) - red face, increased body temperature, sweating (nocturnal),dizziness, sleeplessness, restlessness, pain, weakness lower back, knees, heels pain, tinnitus (buzzying low and persistent day and night)
Symptoms associated with kidneys disorder - Kidney deficiency - (dininished hearing, deafness, tinnitus) with:  fatigue or concurrent problems with the urinary (night urge to urinate), reproductive, or nervous systems
Tinnitus is like an insect sound, if you use your hands to cover the ears, the ringing sound will be diminished or disappear, with: lethargy, dizziness, waist/hip pain, knee pain, impotence, lowered libido, frequent urination (especially at night-time), thirsty at night-time, wake up early.
Kidney Deficiency (Ben) -  sound low, like water rushing, low buzz, low ringing, with:hot flashes, afternoon-evening sweats (Kidney yin deficiency),with: lower back pain or soreness, knee pain, coldness, low sex drive (Kidney YANG deficiency). Most cases both are depleated.
KIDNEY yin Deficiency -  tinnitus, vertigo, poor memory, hardness of hearing, night sweat, dry mouth and throat and nigh, lower backache, ache in bones, nocturnal emission, constipation, dark scanty urine, infertility, premature ejaculation, tiredness, lassitude, depression, slight anxiety. The tongue would be fine and rapid and the pulse would be deep especially in the qi position. In this case there will be empty heat such as heat at night, malar flush, hot flashes, five palm heat, anxiety in the evening   http://bconroytc.wikispaces.com/Tinnitus+-+TCM
Caused by:   overwork, excessive sexual activity (especially as a teenager), loss of body fluids like in a case of febrile disease, loss of blood over a long period of time, chronic illnesses usually in the Liver, Heart, or Lung, and overdosing on Chinese herbs to strengthen Kidney YANG. If detrimental lifestyles and patterns are continued, this pattern can lead to Yin deficiency of various other organs as well.
-do nourish the Kidney yin. This may be done with CV4 without moxa to tonify yin, Ki3 tonifies the kidneys, Ki6 is for Kidney Yin and benefits the throat, KI10 is for Kidney Yin, KI9 tonifies Kidney Yin especially with anxiety and emotional tension. You can use SP6 which tonifies Yin and calms the mind, CV7 nourishes Yin, and LU7 and Ki6 open the directing vessel and will nourish Kidney yin
Kidney Jing weak caused by aging
KIDNEY FAILING to receive Qi
tinnitus as well as shortness of breath upon exertion, difficulty inhaling, chronic cough and or asthma, spontaneous sweating, cold limbs, cold after sweating, swelling of the face, thing body, mentally tired, low back ache, and dizziness. The pulse would be empty deep and weak and the tongue would be pale and swollen with a thin white coat.  http://bconroytc.wikispaces.com/Tinnitus+-+TCM
Causes: hereditary propensity to weakness of the Lungs and Kidneys can often cause this. Chronic diseases, excessive physical work and exercise (with excessive lifting and standing) may also be the cause. A deficient Kidney-YANG may lead to this pattern as well as a deficiency of Lung Qi. If this goes untreated it can lead to the formation of phlegm, which worsens the breathlessness
- do tonify and warm the Kidneys and stimulate the Kidneys ability to receive the Qi. You also should stimulate the descending Lung Qi. KI7 can be used to strength the Kidney’s ability to receive Qi. KI3 tonifies the Qi, LU7 and KI6 opens directing vessel which can descend the Lung Qi and enhance the kidneys reception of Qi. ST 36 tonifies the Qi and is often used in chronic conditions. BL23 is used for Kidney Yang, and CV6 is used for this too and can descend Qi to the abdomen. CV17 tonifies and descends Qi. KD25 is for the chest and can improve breathing. DU12 and BL13 tonify the Lung Qi. CV4 and KI13 are for the Kidneys and KI13 is especially good for helping the kidneys to receive the Qi.
Kidney Essence Defficiency - In children we will see poor bone development, late closure of fontanelle, deafness, mental dullness and retardation. In adults you will often see bone softening, weak knees and legs, poor memory, loose teeth, hair falling out or graying hair that is premature, weak sexual activity, low back pain, infertility, sterility, amenorrhea, dizziness, deafness, blurred vision, absentmindedness, decreased mental sharpness. The tongue will be peeled and red and the pulse will be floating empty or leather.  http://bconroytc.wikispaces.com/Tinnitus+-+TCM
Causes:  usually hereditary and can be caused by the parents being too old when the child was conceived. It can also be caused by a lot of sexual activity or a lot of blood loss as in heavy periods. It can also occur if a woman has children too close together. Kidney Yin or Kidney YANG deficiency may lead to Kidney Essence deficiency. Eventually it can lead to Liver Blood deficiency as Essence has a big role in making blood.
- do nourish the Essence and tonify the kidneys. KI 3 and KI6 tonifies Kidney Yin and KI3 can nourish essence. CV4, KI13, and DU4 all nourish essence. BL23 tonifies the kidneys. GB39, DU20, DU14, DU17, and DU17 are all to nourish the marrow. BL15 tonifies the heart, which in turns strengthens in the mind. BL11 nourishes the bone
Kidney Essence Depleation - related to aging - gradual onset, low sound, with: poor memory, slight dizziness, sore back and knees, and fear.
Kidney -Heart imbalance - Kidney=water, Heart=Fire - Kidney Deficiency+ Heart Blood Deficiency - with:  palpitations, sleeping problems, poor memory, or anxiety marked with a sense of impending doom
- Due to Kidneays disorder:
- do tonify the kidneys, foods : black sesame seeds, goji berries, prawns, beef or beef soup, black kidney beans, soya beans
lower back needs to stay warm and be rich in circulation, excess sex can damage kidney essence
*Kidney yin
Kidney Yin- parasympathetic system, endocrine system , neurotransmitters, restoration and revitalization
“Yin is like a well which must not run dry, a reserve of nutrients which form the basis of growth and the fuel for all physiological activities.”
Kidney yin deficiency due to:
-shallow breathing
-impaired digestion, eating poor quality foods
-Deficient Kidney Qi = infertility, slow growth, low libido, aging.
-Low Kidney Qi may manifest as poor nerve function, memory problems, weak teeth or osteoporosis
-Kidney Yang deficiency - copious pale urination, sense of purpose will be shaky and we will be easily distracted
-Kidney Qi strong - overcome fear and to pursue goals
-Kidney Yin Deficiency - Dry mouth at night, night sweating, red-peeled tongue
-Feeling deeply drained
Fear, anxiety, paranoia, panic
Memory and concentration problems
Lack of inner calm and strength
A floating or drifting sensation
dry skin, dry eyes, vaginal dryness, dark scanty urine, a pale face with flushed red cheeks, a red peeled tongue, a rapid pulse, fatigue, irritability, afternoon heat, night sweats and hot flashes. agitation or even panic attacks, feeling tired but wired, a sense of floating, or of being drained.
- foods that build the Yin or healthy moisture in the body, at the same time nourishing the Kidney energy
-the heat signs are not a sign of excess heat, but a deficient heat that reveals a lack of cooling moisture in the body
emotional upset, nutritional deficiency, overwork can throw off the balance between Yin and Yang. Yin Deficiency means that there is more Yang relative to Yin. If there is not enough of either, the lack of relative Yin will mean that there will be more signs of Yang’s heat and dryness.
Excessive Heat or Not Enough Yin?
Case: Many years ago I was in an acupressure class practicing pulse reading. There was a middle-aged woman who acted in an aggressive way throughout the class. Her voice was loud, her face was flushed, her manner was irritable and impatient. She was sure that Excess Yang was her pattern. After spending a weekend in class with her, I thought she had Excess Yang too. Finally the teacher listened to her pulses which were rapid, noticed her red tongue with no coat, and said that she didn’t have Excess Yang, she had Deficient Yin. She seemed surprised at recognizing her Deficiency, and all the hot energy drained out of her. She looked crestfallen and tired; her voice got soft and weepy, and it became clear that her intensity had covered a deep exhaustion. In that moment I understood how Deficient Yin may masquerade as Excess Yang.
"To nourish the Kidney is to become more and more connected to our own spontaneous impulses and the will to live." Daverick Leggett
- focus on tonifying foods that moisten, along with some mildly cooling foods, and to resist a temptation to overdo cooling foods that may put out a fire that’s not as strong as it seems
Kidney Yin is about the deep reserves in the body including nutritional reserves. Suggest a varied diet that provides a broad array of vitamins, flavonoids, carotenes, trace elements, minerals, and amino acids. This is not the time to eat the same foods over and over again.
Water: Since Yin is about moisture, suggest ample water throughout the day.
Salty flavored foods: miso, sea salt, tamari, salted raw sauerkraut or kimchee (Korean cultured vegetables). Each of the five elements in TCM has a flavor attributed to it, and the Water flavor which governs Kidneys is salty. To support the Water element, recommend a healthy amount of salt, as too much salt will have the opposite effect. Check to make sure your client is not getting too much, and that she has replaced commercial table salt with sea salt.
Kidney shaped foods: black beans, kidney beans, most beans – Because beans are kidney shaped as well as seeds with potential for new life, these foods have long been considered especially nourishing to the Kidneys.
Blue and black foods: Blueberries, blackberries, mulberry, black beans – The colors blue and black correspond to the Water element of the Kidneys. It is possible to strengthen the Water element by eating blue/black foods.
Seafood: fish, shrimp, seaweeds – all support the Water element.
Seeds: flax, pumpkins, sunflower, black sesame – seeds relate to fertility and growth which is governed by Kidney energy.
Nuts: Walnuts, Chestnuts – Nuts are seeds. These nuts are particularly recommended for Kidney energy.
Animal Products: Pork, duck, lamb, eggs, cheese – Small amounts of animal protein can be used therapeutically here. Bob Flaws, L.Ac., author of The Tao of Healthy Eating says, “… animal foods are the most direct way to get the building blocks and constituents of this Yin essence.” Pork and duck are considered moistening. Since animal products are dense foods there are some cautions: If there is digestive impairment, the high fat content of duck may be too much. Lamb is the most warming of the meats, so if the person has a lot of hot flashes or night sweats, this may not be appropriate. Excess cheese may be too dampening for the Spleen. Too much meat, particularly without the balance of vegetables, will Stagnate the Liver and create heat. Look to the individual to decide on the ideal amount of animal products.
Bone-Marrow Broths & Soups: This will nourish Marrow governed by Kidneys. Especially beneficial for people wanting to prevent or heal osteoporosis.
Grains: Barley, Millet. These are both mildly cooling and nourishing to Yin.
Vegetables: Asparagus, Deep green leafy vegetables – Since it has diuretic properties, asparagus is especially helpful with opening the flow for those with dark, scanty urine. Deep green leafy vegetables build the Blood, and since Blood is a Yin fluid, they are highly recommended. Also moist vegetables such as cucumbers and celery are helpful.
Fruits and Melons: These are emphasized since they are moistening and mildly cooling. Too much fruit can be too cooling resulting in diarrhea, but 2-4 pieces of fruit a day should be fine.
Tonics: Spirulina, kelp, chlorella, wheatgrass – These mineral rich foods build the Blood which enhances Yin. They are also high in nucleic acids (RDA/DNA) which have been shown to reduce signs of aging.
Mineral rich herbs: Nettles, Oatstraw. Nettles is a gentle, cooling tonic that supports the Blood and Kidneys, while oatstraw strengthens the nerves.
Moistening herbs: Marshmallow, slippery elm, comfrey, aloe vera gel – these are all moistening demulcents with high mucilage content. Flax seed tea could be used here too.
Chinese Herbs: Rehmannia root - often found in the patent formula used for Kidney Yin Deficiency called “Six Flavor Tea Pills” or “Rehmannia Six”.

Liver Fire Blazing. Liver YANG Raising, Liver Wind
Liver Fire Blazing - an Excess pattern- high pitched (Liver in Excess), with: irritability, anger, deafness, temporal headaches, bitter taste, dream disturbed sleep, constipation with dry stools, dark yellow urine, epistaxis, and haematemesis. Heat signs like red eyes, red face, constipation, yellow urine and feelings of heat,  dry tongue with red sides and a pulse that is rapid andwiry
Caused by emotional strain, anger, frustration
sedate the Liver and clear the fire using a reducing method. The points are LV2 which clears liver fire, LV 3 which drains the liver, and GB20 which clears the liver fire and subdue ascending liver qi. Taiyang can be used to clear liver fire and GB13 subdues ascending LV Yang and calms the Mind. LI 11 is used to clear heat and SP 6 is used to nourish yin. LV1 clears LV and subdues the rising Yang, and GB1,6,8,9 can be used for headaches.patient should try to work through their anger to prevent this from happening again. Emotional repression generally stagnates Qi, and then gives rise to heat. They can also stay away from alcohol, fried foods, and meat.
Prognosis - If the pattern of Liver Fire Blazing persists the Yin may dry up, and can eventually lead to Liver Yin deficiency. The fire may also affect the heart and cause Heart Fire. This is especially the case in patients with a lot of emotional stress.
Liver YANG Raising - mixture of Deficient and Excess - it may eventually lead to Liver Fire Blazing if too much hot foods , or into Liver Wind if not treated
Liver YANG Raising - with: headache on the temples, eyes or lateral side of the head, dizziness, tinnitus, blurred vision, dry mouth and throat, insomnia, irritability, and outbursts of anger. The key symptom that will stand out will be the headaches and not such a obvious heat , pulse in this case would be wiry and thin and the tongue would be dry.
subdue the Liver Yang and tonify the Yin or Blood. Points used are LV3 to subdue the Liver Yang, TB5 to subdue Liver Yang and treat headaches, PC6 to calm the mind and subdue Liver Yang. LI4 regulates the Qi, GB 43 is used for the headaches, GB 38 is used to subdue the Liver Yang, and is used for stubborn migraine. GB20 is used to subdue Liver Yang and B2, GB6, 8 and 9 are all for headaches from Liver Yang Rising. SP6, LV8, and ST 36 all nourish Liver Yin and Liver Blood and KI3 and KI6 are for kidney Yin deficiency.
Liver Wind - ay arise from Liver Yang Rising. In this case there will be tremor, tics, numbness, dizziness, vertigo, headache, convulsions, and paralysis. When the extreme head reaches the blood level, wind may arise. We usually see this in the elderly. The tongue would be deviated, trembling and red and the pulse would be wiry, fine, floating or rapid.
cool the blood, nourish the Yin and expel the wind. The points are LV3 to extinguish wind, Shixuan to extinguish wind and cool blood, DU20, DU16, and GB20 for wind. DU8 is used for spasm, and  DU 14 to cool blood
Liver Excess and Vertigo - Liver Fire Rising (anger, frustration, Internal Wind) with: diziness, sharp, painful, stabbing headache or dizziness-vertigo.
Kidney-Liver imbalance - Liver Qi Stagnation - due to yin Deficiency or Liver Blood Deficiency - Liver Excess+Kidney Deficiency
Liver - Spleen imbalance - Spleen Qi Deficiency (long standing, Internal Dampness)+Liver Qi Stagnation = Phlegm Fire Rising upwards with: heavy head, dizziness or vertigo, and the sound of crickets.
Liver, GB disorder (meridians run around the ears) -Liver YANG floating upward (Liver YANG Rising or Liver Fire rising, Internal Wind  - with: HBP, headache, vertigo, and ringing in the ears
Symptoms associated with Liver, GB disorder
Tinnitus sounds like running water or loud machinery, When the ears are covered by the hands, the ringing sound will louder. with: easily to become angry, aggressive, very emotional, stressed, reddened face and hot bodied, restlessness and frequent dreaming, insomnia, constipation or sluggish bowel movement, abdomen feeling full or bloating, dizziness, neck and shoulder stiff and painful, headache, itchy ears.
sudden (low, roaming, loud, screaming, thunder- an excess condition) (Liver Fire Rising (anger, frustration, emotional changes,Internal Wind) with:  red face and eyes, bitter taste, headache, dizziness, and mental irritability.
GB dampness (swelling) affects the GB channel (it is not a GB disease)
-Due to Liver, GB disorder:
-support Liver, GB - reduce stress, strong emotions, slow down your lifestyle, do relaxing exercises (swimming, Taichi, yoga, listen to soft music), avoid spicy, deep fried foods, Foods: Celery, carrot, oranges, green tea, mint tea, lemon and green leafy vegetables help to clear the blockage and heat within the Liver and Gallbladder, and adjusts ear circulation to help tinnitus.
Weak chest Qi - caused by sadness and grief
.........................................................
Blood deficiency
yin deficiency (hot flashes, feeling flushed, nightsweats, chronic sore throat and/or dry mouth, ringing in the ears (tinnitus) and scanty dark urine)
-nourish yin, nourish yin-YANG , subdue hyperactive liver YANG,clearing heat, cooling the body
tinnitus is intermittent. The severity of the sound varies. It often occurs after a major disease or excessive workload and is associated with sleeplessness, anxiety, palpitation, lack of energy, and pale face.
..........................................
Symptoms associated (in general)
-dizziness,headache,vertigo,anxiety,hyperthiroidism,HBP,palpitations,insomnia,irregular heart beat,(blood deficiency), night sweats, tidal fever (yin deficiency), cough, hemoptysis,TB (bone TB) (hyperactive fire -yin deficiency),deafness / hearing loss (kidney yin insufuciency),blurring vision (liver yin, kidney yin deficiency),HBP (swelling in the eyes, vexation, palpitations),lassitude in loin and legs, unsteadiness in walking, dark red tongue, dry fur, fatigue, mental focus, stress, insomnia (imbalance between heart and kidneys =yin deficiency),disturbed sleep, excessive dreaming, numbness, muscle twitches, spasms in the extremities, hemiplegia (Liver Wind,Liver YANG raising, hot flashes, chronic sore throat, insomnia, fatigue during the day, difficulty reading or working, deterioration of certain aspects of memory, tension, anxiety, chest pain, palpitations (strong heart beats),joint pain, heartburn (hyperacidity), loss of appetite and loss of weight, hyperacusis (high sensitivity to noise), irritability (becomes angry as a result of any stress) and, as a result, destruction of his or her social life or family relations.  [ http://tcmdiscovery.com/2007/7-15/200771521339.html ]

Auricular reflexology (it may take a long time) - Cases
the principle that chronic illness is represented in the ear in the form of lineally organised points. NOGIER had emphasised in his early publications that pertinent causal connections of a given disease were also visible within the energy lines of the ear in addition to the several respective organ or organ system points.
When recalling different areas of the ear plus the organs or organ-systems represented there, the innately profound meaning of this concept can be recognised. According to embryological development, the concha reflects entodermal organs (stomach and intestines, inner organs); the area between concha and helix reflects the mesodermal somatotopies  (bones, muscles, vessels, heart, kidney, genitals), while the back of the ear, the helix rim and the ear lobes reflect the nervous system and the skin.
Since the points found for reflexes or organ disturbances are always situated along a treatment line that runs from zero to the helix across the ear, a certain state of illness is always represented on each of the three germ layers, and all layers are affected by any given treatment. This is the basis for the far-reaching therapeutic implications that exist in ear acupuncture. It means that a whole segment reveals itself as a disease complex for both diagnosis and treatment.
The resulting treatment concept is quite simple. Virulent points are sought and treated along the treatment line that is indicated for the respective diseases and their corresponding points. [http://www.sg-earacupuncture.org/html/tinnitus.html  ]

After three treatments in intervals of two weeks, a significant improvement was reported. Thereafter, treatment intervals were extended to three weeks (another four treatments!). After that, treatment was successfully terminated. This was two years ago. Disturbances have not recurred.

SUPPLEMENTS VITAMINS
Vitamin B3. One small study found that taking this vitamin (also called nicotinamide or niacin) for a month didn't help tinnitus.12
Antihistamines. Antihistamines are normally used to calm down allergic reactions. Only one antihistamine has been studied as a treatment for tinnitus. It's called cinnarizine (Cinaziere, Stugeron, Stugeron Forte). It didn't help.13
Zinc. Zinc is a mineral the body needs. One small study found that taking 100 milligrams (mg) of zinc three times a day for two months didn't relieve tinnitus.14
Muscle relaxants. These drugs are often used for conditions like back pain. One small study found that the muscle relaxant baclofen (Baclospas, Lioresal) didn't
-ZN picolinate (90-150mg daily for 3-6 months)
-B12 Bcomplex with emphasis on B12 or  (injectible hydroxycobalamin, which hurts less than cyano or methylcobalamin)
Dr. Michael Seidman, MD, Director of the Henry Ford Health System, Department of Otolaryngology, Tinnitus Clinic, in Bloomfield, Michigan, suggests a smorgasbord of antioxidant nutrients: vinpocetine, Ginkgo biloba, ipriflavone, arginine, alpha lipoic acid, zinc, vitamin A, n-acetylcysteine, magnesium, melatonin, Chinese herbs, B vitamins and garlic. Other sources list additional supplements: vitamin E, C, zinc, and choline, to help with both tinnitus and hearing loss.  http://tcmdiscovery.com/2007/9-28/200792819221.html

MAGNETS
Tape them to the bottom of the foot in a spot located at the center of each foot (Kidney 1) and wear them daily for at least a couple of months. This can stimulate the  Kidney. http://askdrlu.com/2011/01/12/ringing-in-the-ears/

EUSTACHIAN TUBE DRAINAGE
make sure your hands are clean. With your mouth not too wide open, gently find your back molars on one side with your index finger. Beyond the molars is the curve of flesh-covered bone that creates the hinge between the upper and lower jaw. Gently go beyond the hinge, towards the back of the throat until you find a stringy vertical tendon. This is called the “tonsillar pillar”. Touch here will make most people gag, so go softly and carefully. Just behind the tonsillar pillar, down low near the root of the tongue, is the Eustachian tube, which feels like a small “mole tunnel” under the flesh. It may be impossible to feel, but if you got the tonsillar pillar you’re in the right area. Gently stroke the Eustachian tube from the ear side of the back of the throat towards the middle (towards the tongue) several times until you can’t stand it. Same thing on the other side if the tinnitus is bilateral. Do this daily and consistently for up to a week. Repeat as needed.

IRIDOLOGY
Right Eye   Left Eye

http://www.sg-earacupuncture.org/assets/images/augen.gif
If disturbance fields have been found through iris diagnostics within the opposite iris segment of the right eye at 50 to 55 for the ear and 20 to 25 for the bladder, and within the left eye at 5–10 for the ear and 35–40 for the bladder, then this finding indicates, first of all, an ear/bladder connection. Thus, evidence exists that this patient not only has an ear problem, but indeed a severe bladder/kidney problem. Accordingly, the kidney/bladder problem must be eliminated in order to cure the tinnitus disease.
RETRAINING THERAPY (TRT)

TMS involves placing a coil on the scalp. This coil creates a magnetic field over the brain's surface, which penetrates up to two or three centimeters from the surface of the coil. The magnetic field produces an electric current that either activates or inhibits neural activity. "We use a PET scan of the patient's brain to look for excessive neural activity with increased blood flow in the temporal lobe. Then we target that area with low-frequency TMS to inhibit the neural activity and decrease the tinnitus," said Mark Mennemeier, Ph.D., associate professor of neurobiology and director of the Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Laboratory in the Center for Translational Neuroscience (CTN) at UAMS who conducts the treatment study and evaluates its effectiveness.  http://tcmdiscovery.com/2008/7-29/200872915220.html

FOODS - Crop Yields Inadequate to Feed the World by 2050: Study

By Fiona Harvey, The Guardian

If the world is to grow enough food for the projected global population in 2050, agricultural productivity will have to rise by at least 60 percent, and may need to more than double, according to researchers who have studied global crop yields.

They say that productivity is not rising fast enough at present to meet the likely demands on agriculture.

The research does not take into account other factors, such as climate change, which the World Bank said this week could lead to massive food shortages in many areas as soon as the 2030s.
Credit: Amanda Koster/Corbis

The researchers studied yields of four key staple crops - maize, rice, wheat and soybeans - and found they were increasing by only about 0.9 percent to 1.6 percent a year. That would lead to an overall increase of about 38 percent to 67 percent by 2050, which would only be enough to feed the population if the lower end of the estimate of yields needed and the maximum yield increase turns out to be the case.

It also does not take into account other factors, such as climate change, which the World Bank said this week could lead to massive food shortages in many areas as soon as the 2030s.

The study's findings are also likely to fuel debate over the efficacy of genetically modified crops, which some scientists have argued may be needed in future to feed the rapidly growing global population, which is expected to reach at least 9 billion by 2050.

Deepak Ray, who led the new research, said that some countries were faring far worse than others. For instance, in Guatemala, the productivity of the maize agriculture is declining, while the population is growing.

The slow increase in agricultural productivity around the world stands in marked contrast to the "green revolution" that led to a huge increase in crop yields in Asia in the 1960s to 1970s, with the widespread use of new artificial fertilizers, pesticides and growing techniques. The green revolution enabled high population growth and sparked unprecedented economic growth in many Asian countries. Signs that its effects have petered out could be a warning that future population growth may be harder to accommodate.

The study's findings are likely to fuel debate over the value of genetically modified crops, which some scientists have argued may be needed in future to feed the rapidly growing global population, which is expected to reach at least 9 billion by 2050.

There is also a danger that large swathes of pristine land - including forests - could be cleared for agriculture to compensate for the slow growth in yields, with potentially damaging effects on the climate and on ecosystems. Fertile agricultural land is at a premium in most countries, and overuse, water scarcity and soil degradation are taking further tolls.

However, the authors of the study only examined crop yields - they emphasized that there should be other ways to improve the world's food supply, including increasing efficiency and cutting the massive waste of food that takes place in both developed and developing countries.

Jon Foley, co-author of the paper, said: "Clearly, the world faces a looming agricultural crisis, with yield increases insufficient to keep up with projected demands. The good news is, opportunities exist to increase production through more efficient use of current arable lands and increased yield growth rates by spreading best management practices. If we are to boost production in these key crops to meet projected needs, we have no time to waste."

NEWS - Solving the Mystery of Legionnaire's Disease

Solving the Mystery of Legionnaire's Disease

In 1976, the Stratford Hotel in Pennsylvania held a convention for the Pennsylvania chapter of the American Legion. Just after the convention, 221 of the attendees got sick with a strange case of pneumonia. Seventy-two of them died.

They provided the name for a culprit that had been killing for thousands of years, and had been studied for decades.

Legionnaire's Disease caused quite a health scare when it first came to light. After a convention of the American Legion, with over 2000 attendees, different legionnaires began to get sick. The symptoms, fever, coughing, and difficulty breathing, came on just days after the beginning of the convention, but the deaths dragged on for months. The convention had been in August, and by the end of the fall, one third of those infected had died. Those were nightmare rates of fatality, and people wanted to know what was causing them.

At the time, there was the added confusion of a very recent influenza outbreak with similar symptoms, and so it was only when the CDC turned a sample of tissue over to Dr Joseph McDade that they finally got a break. He was studying bacteria, but was asked to help in ruling out a certain kind of fever. After ruling it out, he experimented a little with guinea pigs and antibiotics. When he noticed some strange bacteria in the guinea pig tissue, he finally isolated the cause of Legionnaire's Disease - a strain of bacteria since called Legionella pneumophila. After a some searching, the CDC found it in the cooling tower of the air conditioning of the hotel.

Solving the Mystery of Legionnaire's Disease

A new mystery, which replaced the old, was how exactly this bacteria had remained harmless for so long and then suddenly caused so many infections and deaths. The answer was, it had not. Eleven years before the Stratford Hotel incident, it had caused 14 deaths in a psychiatric hospital in Washington. Nine years before that, seventy-eight workers at a meatpacking plant went to the hospital with a mysterious case of pneumonia.

Both outbreaks remained mysteries for the same reason. Legionella isn't the proto-pandemic it appeared to be when it made headlines in 1976. It only grows in very specific conditions. McDade found the bacteria in part because guinea pigs are particularly susceptible to the bacteria. Mice, which the rest of the CDC was using, were not. Streams and public water systems are also not. The bacteria need temperatures of between 95 and 115 degrees, which is why they're generally found in hot springs. It's likely that people have been getting this disease from dips in hot springs for thousands of years.

Solving the Mystery of Legionnaire's Disease

Legionnaire's Disease is likely most infectious when, as it did in 1976, it gets into the air conditioning system. The bacteria are dispersed in the water in the system, and sprayed as aerosol drops over everyone in the building. People inhale them into their lungs, where the bacteria do the most damage.

It's not just air conditioning systems that cause the problem. Hot tubs and jacuzzis, with their warm temperatures and heavy steam rising up, also cause a lot of outbreaks. Anywhere there is a lot of warm water that people breathe into their lungs, there is the potential to inhale Legionella pneumophila. Fortunately, it's not the killer that the first known outbreak made it seem. Many people who get infected get what's known as Pontiac Fever - nothing more than an unpleasant fever and a lot of coughing. Some health officials think that, if anything, Legionnaire's Disease is so mild that it's often under-reported.
